The Guidelines of Being a Correctional Officer

NEVADA DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS
TRAINING OVERVIEW
Arriving On Duty
- When You Arrive Clock In (Go on Duty)
- Gear Up, grab your baton, pepper spray, tazer and handcuffs
- DO NOT GRAB A GUN, UNLESS TOLD TO BY A SUPIEROR
- You Must Wear Your Protective Vest at ALL TIMES!
- Announce into the Radio (/r) That You are on shift

Basic Duties- Patrol the Prison, look for any suspicious activity or if a inmate is in need of assistance.
- If you notice a group of inmates in a area without a DOC member present, stand guard in that area.
- Report the number of inmates and COs in various rooms.
- If 5+ COs are on shift, one should be watching the CCTV
- If 4+ COs are on shift and their is a heavy inmate presence in the yard, have one CO perched in the guard tower

Taking Down a Inmate- If you feel as though a inmate has broken a rule and must be taken down, report it into your radio.
- Calmly ask the inmate to lay on the ground.
- If the inmate does not comply ask one more time calmly.
- If the inmate refuses to comply again, a tazer may be used to force the inmate down.
- Lay one Knee on the Inmates back and keep the pressure on.
- Apply hand cuffs (/cuff)

Searching a Inmate- Radio in who you're frisking and if you need back up.
- To search a inmate make sure the inmate is complying to the search or is in handcuffs.
- Run your hands up and down the inmates body feeling for any contraband.
- If a inmate has contraband he is to be placed in isolation.

Breaking Up a Fight- Radio in the Fight.
- When breaking up a fight your safety and the safety of other inmates/correctional officers comes first.
- Use your pepper spray on the individuals to subdue them.
- If that does not work, use your tazer
- In extreme cases, run to the arsenal and grab the beanbag shotgun use it.
- Once the fight is subdued you are to look at the CCTV and review the evidence.
- Determine if who should be isolated.

RIOT Protocal- When stopping up a riot your safety and the safety of other inmates/correctional officers comes first.
- Radio In for Backup
- Announce on the intercom (/intercom) for all inmates to lay prone on the ground.
- Remain Calm but run to the lockeroom.
- Get on your riot gear
- Grab a beanbag shotgun
- You and the other COs are to enter the area where the riot occurred as a team.
- Focus on helping any injuried inmates/officers first.
- Discharge the beanbags onto anyone who refuses to comply.
- Once all the inmates involved with the riot are in cuffs, escort ALL inmates into either Cell Block A or B.
- DO NOT ESCORT INMATES WHO FOUGHT EACHOTHER TOGETHER
- DO NOT KEEP THE INMATES WHO FOUGHT EACHOTHER IN THE SAME CELL BLOCK
- Lock the Cell Block Doors, once all inmates are in the cell blocks.
- Watch the CCTV and determine who should be isolated.

When to Use Deadly Force- When a CO is in serious danger of losing his/life life. (NOTE: THIS DOES NOT MEAN JUST GETTING ATTACKED)
- When a Inmate is in serious danger of losing his/her life. (NOTE: THIS DOES NOT MEAN JUST GETTING ATTACKED)
- If a inmate is seen escaping the prison.

- Do not bunny hop or run around the prison.
- Only use /r for ic means.
- Respect inmates/Correctional Officers OOC
- Do not abuse your power.
